Santas Earl Wellman, 90, of Hickory, passed away Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley in Newton.

Mr. Wellman was born August 30, 1920 in Burke County to the late William and Vassie Tallent Wellman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Wellman.

Mr. Wellman was a sawmill owner and operator. He helped organize Cooksville Fire Department where he served 28 years on the Board of Directors, and was also a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church where he served on various boards.

Survivors include his wife, Nannie Gert Rhoney Wellman of the home; four daughters, Tommie Johnson and husband Marcus of Hildebran, Brenda Mitchell and husband Roy of Hudson, Sue Whitener and husband Randy of Mt. View and Diane Cook of Hickory; grandchildren, Cynthia Coyle of Kernersville, Debbie Hildebran of Hickory, Mike Johnson of Hildebran, Daren Johnson of Huntersville, Leigh Ann Houser of Raleigh, Jonathan Cooke of Cary, Scott Whitener of Mt. View, Susie Lowman and Brad Lowman of Connelly Springs, and Greg Lowman of Granite Falls; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Phifer Wellman of Hickory and Cecil Wellman of Lawndale; and two sisters, Ilene Brittain and Bonnie Shull, both of Vale.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 3 p.m. at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with the Rev. David McCauley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
