Despondency Over Poor Health Thought One Reason for Action of Retired Railroad Man
Greenfield July 22 - "Death by a self-inflicted wound," was attributed by Medical Examiner; found slain under suspicious circumstances at 1 Wilson avenue, the home of his sister-in-law Mrs Emma H Greer [wife of Charles J Greer]; aged 62, retired railroad man; 22 caliber rifle lying beside him belonged to the dead man's nephew Walter who lives in same house; poor health and alleged differences of opinion with relatives is believed to have brought upon a despondent condition which lead Mr Greer to take his own life; native of Florida, Mass.; came to Greenfield as a blacksmith for the Boston & Maine Railroad in 1914, retiring in 1924 because of poor health; surviving are a brother Frederick F Greer of Greenfield, two sisters Mrs Leonard Calkins of Greenfield and Mrs Horace Howie of Springfield, several nieces and nephews; funeral from McCarthy funeral home, burial in Southview cemetery North Adams.
