Robert W. Lee, RPh, age 73, died peacefully on Saturday, March 5, 2005, at American Lutheran Nursing Home in Menomonie with hospice, after living with brain cancer for more than two years.

He was born in Menomonie to Jacob P. “Jake” and Evelyn (Walsh) Lee on Nov. 25, 1931. He served in the U.S. Navy as gunfire control technician aboard the USS Rooks-DD804 from 1952 to 1956. He returned to the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy in Madison and graduated in August 1959, when he joined his father at Lee’s Drug Store, 149 Main St. (across from the Stout Tower) and Lee’s Pharmacy in the Red Cedar Clinic. Jake died May 1, 1960. In 1997, Bob closed the clinic pharmacy. He retired in December 1999 when he sold the Main Street business to the Medicine Shoppe. He continued to work for them part time until the onset of his illness in November of 2002. Bob married Dianne F. Borgwardt in Oshkosh, Wis., Nov. 28, 1957.

Bob was active in local and state organizations. A few include Menomonie Masonic Lodge, Stout Foundation Board, First National Bank director, United Way Board, Toastmasters, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce and had an American Legion lifetime membership. He served in local, state and national professional pharmaceutical organizations. He also was a member of Kappa Psi, a professional pharmacy fraternity. Bob was chosen as the Red Cedar Clinic Honoree in 2000. A plaque commemorating this hangs in the Myrtle Werth-Mayo Hospital in Menomonie.

At the age of 9, he started working in his dad’s drug store. There was a shortage of manpower because of the onset of WW II. At that time, the Red Cedar Clinic was on the second floor, so he was close to the development of the Red Cedar Clinic and Lee’s Drug Store for most of his life. The drug store was in the Lee family for 75 years.

Bob loved hunting, fishing, camping, boating and flying. He was a private pilot, and during his lifetime he owned a J-3 Cub and a Stinson 108-3. He built radio control model airplanes and enjoyed flying them with Menomonie R/C Flyers. With his daughter, he rehabilitated raptors including hawks, owls, falcons and an occasional swan or heron.

Bob will be remembered for his professional standards, his hard work, his compassion for his customers, his quick wit and the jokes he loved to dispense with prescriptions. He was loved by many.

Bob is survived by his wife, Dianne; son, John (Amy) of Mount Horeb, Wis.; son, Mark (Jackie) and her two children Nate and Alex; daughter, Barbara Meyer (Klaus-Erich) and their daughter, Alessandra of Leer, Germany; and a sister Evelyn Weston (Clayt) of Oshkosh, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; and an infant brother, Tom.

A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2005, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Menomonie, with Father Dale Klitzke officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery at a later date.

Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie is assisting the family.

Memorials are to be sent to the Menomonie Public Library, 600 Wolske Bay Road; Grace Episcopal Church, 1002 Sixth St.; or donor’s choice.
