Born in a blizzard on Feb. 3, 1923 in the Wythe section of Hampton, Mary spent much her life in Fox Hill, where she was a member of Fox Hill Central Methodist Church, the Fox Hill Historical Society and was a past president of the Fox Hill Women's Club. She loved gardening and needlework and was also a member of the York River Garden Club, the Peninsula Rose Society, Merrymakers Homemakers and the Knitting Guild of Gloucester.
Mary lived her life for others, her husband; her children; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. She tirelessly sewed clothes and dressed dolls and bears for the Salvation Army, believing that every child should have a new toy for Christmas. Her home was often full of these in various stages of dress, as she prepared them each year to give away. Mary also organized her clubs to knit caps for newborns and for the homeless. She never lost the wonder of the holidays and nature, marveling at the beauty of an autumn tree just days before her death.
Mary and her husband traveled extensively while health permitted seeing most of the United States and several foreign countries. She joked that the plan one year was to go to Spokane and turn right!
Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 66 years and the love of her life, Edward Marvin (Sody) Smith Jr. She is also survived by her children, Joy S. Long and husband, the Honorable R. Bruce Long and Craig A. Smith and his wife, Christy; grandchildren, Cameron Watson Long, Ashley Watson Long (Tori), Leslie Smith Cumbow (Joshua) and Kyle A. Smith; great- grandchildren, Conner, Corey, Ethan and Gavin Long; brother Dr. John W. Watson and his wife, Debbie; sisters-in-law Barbara Watson and Anna Marie Smith; a host of nephews, a niece, cousins and aunt and an uncle.
Her journey the past two years was made easier by the love and compassion of many, especially the nurses, aides, staff and Nurse Practitioner, Barb Williams, at York Convalescent Home.
A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m.. Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave., Hampton. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, at the funeral home
