Ozell was called Sam by his family and friends. He was a machinist by trade. Sam died at the young age of 43, in Hendrick Memorial Hospital in Abilene, TX after a brief illness.

Sam left wife, Corena and four young children, Sam (Jr.), Jimmy, Shirley and Joe Robert "Bob" Ashabranner (1936 - 2006) to morn him.

Unfortunately Sam's son, Sam Ozell Ashabranner (1931 - 1967), did not even see age 40. Sam (Jr.) was murdered by his wife, Lillian Grace CHAPPLE Ashabranner (1931 - 2000) at age 35 on 7 May 1967 in Odessa. This murder also left four young Ashabranner children without their father.
