Harry Burgess Wood, editor of the Recorder, was married to Miss Annie Lee Holt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lafayette Holt, Burlington, N.C. On Tuesday, Oct. 10, 1911 at 8 p.m. in Lynchburg. The couple is now enjoying a months wedding trip to Bermuda and the Isle of Pines.

Former Recorder owner Annie L. Wood died last week at the age of 106. Wood and her husband Harry Burgess Wood, Sr. owned and operated the Recorder for 50 years. Joseph Pritchard who purchased the newspaper from the Woods in 1965, recalled Mrs. Wood. "She was quite a lady, "he said "I always gave credit to her for naming Highland 'Virginia's Little Switzerland'
Annie Lee Wood
On Feb. 11, 1995, Annie Lee Wood wife of the late Harry Burgess Wood, passed away quietly at the Bath County Community Hospital in Hot Springs. She was a longtime resident of Monterey. Mrs. Wood was born on Sept. 16, 1888 in Burlington, N.C., a daughter of the late Henry L. and Rosa Bessie Montgomery Holt.
After attending the public schools of Alamance County, she graduated from Elon College with a bachelor of arts degree in painting. Pursuing her special interest in education, Mrs. Wood taught public school in Burlington and later accepted a teaching position with the public school system in Monterey.
In 1911 she married Harry B. Wood, editor and owner of The Highland Recorder. Mr. Wood passed away on Jan. 8, 1961 after publishing the county paper for over 50 years.
Mrs. Wood was an ardent writer and served in many and served in many administrative and editorial capacities with The Highland Recorder. She often remarked one reason she enjoyed working for The Highland Recorder was the opportunity it gave her to meet the residences of the county.
Survivors include one son, Dr. Harry Burgess Wood, Jr. of Bethesda, Md. and Monterey; one granddaughter of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Her daughter Dorothy Holt Wood, passed away in 1916. Her four sisters Eva Estelle Holt, Ruth Holt, Nerta Hunt and Mamie Kimmins, and one brother Daniel A. Holt proceeded her in death some years ago.
