William Calder Is Suicide By Shooting
William A. Calder, 36, a World War II Navy veteran, was found dead in his workshop at his home in Kennebunk early Friday afternoon. Medical Examiner J. Robert Downing ruled that death was due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound from a high powered rifle.
Calder was found by his wife and daughter, when notified authorities. He was reported to have been in ill health and was waiting admission to the Togus Veterans hospital. Investigating were Kennebunk Police Chief Frank Stevens, Officer Forrest Brown, Sgt. Kenneth Wood of the Maine State Police, State Trooper Paris Melven, Deputy Sheriff Burleigh Richards, Buxton, and Deputy Sheriff Raymond Ingalls, Kennebunk.
Calder was born in Biddeford December 24, 1924, son of Arthur E. and Sarah (Hubbard) Calder. He was a member of the Webber-Lefebvre post, American Legion, and had been self-employed as a fisherman.
Survivors include his father; his widow, Mrs. Vesta (Cuddy) Calder; two daughters, Susan Ann and Rebecca Jean, and a brother, Robert W. Calder, all of Kennebunk.
Private funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. from Bibber Memorial chapel, 67 Summer street, Kennebunk, with Rev. Carl Bierman, pastor of the Unitarian church, officiating. Burial will be in the family lot at Evergreen cemetery.
