Onufrey Zilinski was born in the village of Voloca, Bukowina, Austria-Hungary, June 12th, 1883.

In the fall of 1898, an agent from the Canadian Land Office visited Voloca with an offer of 160 Free acres of farm land to anyone willing to emigrate and help settle the prairies of Western Canada. So in April, 1899, Onufri, along with his parents and siblings, decided to emigrate with five other related families. These included the families of Nicolai Penteleiciuc, Nicolas Ropchan, Mihai Bordian, Procop & Paraschiva Axenty, and John & Gheorghe Paulencu. They took a train from Czernowitz to Hamburg, Germanay and, on April 26, 1899, set sail aboard the S.S. Brasailia, landing in Halifax, Nova Scotia on May 9th.
