Obituary (Illinois State Journal, Springfield, 31 Dec 1933):

SCHUYLER MAN
FATALLY HURT
ON STATE ROAD

George Vance, 71, Struck
By Auto While Going
To Rushville

Rushville, Dec. 30. - George Vance, 71, of near Ripley, was killed this morning when struck by an automobile driven by Raymond Ehrhardt, proprietor of a local hardware store, near Ripley hill, eight miles southwest of here.

Vance, who had recently been making his home with relatives in the vicinity of Ripley, was making his way on foot to Rushville to meet his daughter, Mrs. Mae Berry, with whom he planned to spend the New Year holiday. Vance was blind in one eye and it is believed he did not notice the approaching auto. Darkness prevented Ehrhardt seeing the pedestrian in time to halt his machine.

A coroner's jury which held an inquest here this afternoon held the accident was unavoidable.

Vance is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Berry, and a son, Lawrence, who lives in Galesburg.

Funeral services will be held at Ripley Methodist Episcopal church at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon. Interment will be in Ripley cemetery.
