OLEAN - Vincent J. Erickson, formerly of 844 Garden Ave., Olean, died Friday (April 23, 2004) at St. Mary's Hospice, Rochester, following a brief illness.
Born in the town of Olean on Jan. 3, 1913, he was a son of the late John and Mary Jane Fontaine Erickson. On June 10, 1939, in St. Mary of the Angels Church, Olean, he married the former Rita Ellen Laverty, who passed away Nov. 24, 2000.
A lifetime resident of Olean, he was a veteran of World War II, serving with the US Army.
Mr. Erickson was manager of the Olean office of the New York State Department of Labor Division of Employment, retiring in 1968.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church.
Mr. Erickson was a well-known musician in the Olean area and was a long-standing member and past secretary and president of the American Federation of Musicians Local 115, which later merged with Local 134 of Jamestown. He was a life member of Olean Elks Lodge 491, a member of Olean American Legion and was a volunteer fireman for Kinney Hose Co. in Weston's Mills.
Surviving are a daughter, Rita Michele (William E.) Gregory of Fairport; two grandchildren, William P. (Stephanie) Gregory of Fairport and Jennifer A. Gregory of Rochester;two great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.
Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
