Rev. Charles Blunt Mills died suddenly March 11, 1896, at his home in Mayville while sitting in his chair during the temporary absence of his wife in attendance at their weekly prayer meeting. He was born in York County, Maine, May 5, 1823. He received a good common and high school education, and at an early age he became a minister in the Free Baptist denomination. He was a close student and gave frequent lectures in addition to his regular pastoral work. He removed to Ohio, and from there, in 1856, to Tuscola County, where he bought a farm. He was a State senator in 1869-70 and a representative in 1877 and was judge of probate for Tuscola County eight years. He had been a trustee of Hillsdale College for many years and several years acted as its secretary and treasurer, and was one of the incorporators of the Free Baptist printing house at Dover, N. H. From his close resemblance, both in features and actions to Henry Ward Beecher, he was frequently mistaken for that individual in his earlier days. His address made at Caro in September, 1895, to the large outdoor gathering of the Tuscola County Sunday School Association will long be remembered and his memory cherished by all present on that occasion. He married Ann M. Morrison in 1851, who survives him.
