Dan was a veterinary surgeon. He practiced in Brenham out of his farm on old Route 1, where he died of a heart attack at age 81. The farmhouse was located in the grove of trees at the top of the hill where Becker and Stringer streets now intersect. His grandson, Robert (Bo), remembers childhood visits to the farm, which stretched well down the hill.

Dan married Esther Dignowity, with whom he had two children:
Darwin, who died as a POW in WWII, whose ashes are interred at the Yokohama War Cemetery in Japan; and
Dorothy Othelia, born 1917 in Brenham, married Robert Dillon Stringer, died 15 Dec 1991 in Colorado.
