Nancy was daughter of Isaac J. and Rebecca Ann (Hildebrand) Broughton.
Her brother William David Broughton married Pothenia Emmaliza (Eliza) "Lydia" Smith, sister of Nancy's husband John M. Smith.

Mrs. J. M. Smith, an aged lady who has made her home in Van Alstyne for a long period, died yesterday morning at 4 o'clock. She had been quite feeble for several months. The immediate cause of her death is said to have been heart trouble. Her daughter Mrs. R. P. Elrod of Tyler arrived Friday morning. The body was interred at Van Alstyne cemetery this afternoon.
