John Biedenbender, one of the pioneers and highly respected citizens of Rantoul, was stricken with paralysis on June 23rd and passed away at his home near Potter on June 25. His sudden and unexpected demise was a shock to his family and a source of regret to his many friends. His age was 77 years, 9 months and 25 days.
John Biedenbender was born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, on Aug. 30, 1846,and was the son of Adam and Margaretha Biedenbender. He immigrated to America with his parents in 1857, settling in the Town of Russel, Sheboygan County, where they lived for several years. In the sixties John Biedenbender purchased a farm of eighty acres in the Town of Rantoul adjacent to the village of Potter on the south and was married to Margaretha Schwalenberg in that town on March 1, 1870. They began lifes journey on this farm and lived on it for fifty-four years or to the time of his death.
Mr Biedenbender was an eminently successful farmer. Starting in the woods with but little means, his untiring energy, thrift and level headed business ability soon placed him in the front ranks of the farmers of this section. He lived to add acres to the original homestead and also see his sons and daughters settled on some of the best farms in the Town of Rantoul. In the early days Mr Biedenbender did most of his business at Chilton and the father of the Times editor and he were close friends. He was broad minded, public spirited and did his share of the pioneer work of building up this community. He was a great favorite with every one who knew him, his kindly smile and friendly handshake making him popular with every one. He lived a good life and died regretted by many friends.
The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon at one o'clock from the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rev. Martin Sauer officiating and preaching an eloquent sermon on his life. The remains were laid to rest in the parish cemetery, the following acting as pall bearers, Carl Hillman, Martin Schwalenberg, Herman Duchow, Otto Duchow, Albert Schwalenberg and Alvin Leider, nephews of the deceased.
He is survived by his wife and eight children, Herman, Henry, Mrs Wm. Riemer, Rudolph, Carl, Mrs Wm. Dekarske, John and William of Rantoul. He also leaves thirteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren, a step brother, Peter Opper of Birnamwood and a sister, Mrs Birkholz of Stockbridge.
