Son of Paul ULMER (1799-1851) & Maria Ann "Makie" WILSON, (1801-1846)
Husband of Mary Liston Keenan (m. Dec 4, 1856 at Quincy, Gadsden Co, FL); father of Paul, Maria, Louisa, Bessie, John, Edna, Fred, Guy, Olive, and Marcus.

Civil War: Enlisted in March 1862 in Robert Henry Partridge's 15th Florida Cavalry, Company A.

Capt. John Ulmer grew up on his father's Rose Hill Plantation (Beaufort Co, SC.) & received such education as the schools there afforded. He was a very large, handsome man, full of humor and very thrifty on his plantation. He married Mary Liston Kenan of Quincy Fla. who survived him many years. Her sons and daughters left the old home, one by one, as they married, and had homes of their own, except the oldest, Paul, who was a widower. Later it was deemed advisable for the mother, to buy a home and live in Monticello, Fla.
There were ten children, four of whom are living, and two of these occupy the homestead. John Ulmer was a patriotic man of the South and when war was declared in 1861, he took his place with the many who served their country and was made captain of the Magnolia Dragoons, Company A, 15th Confederate Cavalry.

JOHN ULMER was born Dec. 4, 1823 at Rose Hill Plantation, Beaufort Co, SC. & died Sept. 12, 1901 in Monticello, FL. He married MARY LISTER KENAN Dec. 4, 1856. She was born November 17, 1838 in Quincy, FL, and died August 12, 1917 in Monticello, FL.

Mary Elizabeth ULMER (1866-1931), the daughter of Capt. John ULMER C.S.A. (1823-1901) married, Daniel Butler BIRD* (1859-1921), son of Capt. Pickens Brooks BIRD C.S.A. (1833-1864). *See below info.*

*The youngest son, Daniel Butler BIRD, married Elizabeth Ulmer (1866-1931), a sister to Maria Ulmer (1860-1920), the wife of his older brother Preston Brooks BIRD.

Their one child, a son Thomas B. Bird, was the Judge of Jefferson Co, Fla. served as a Captain in the First World War and was a man highly respected by the whole community.

Judge Thomas B. Bird (1892-1953) & his wife Martha Van Dalsem had two girls, Elizabeth Lee and Martha Ann.
An automobile accident resulted in the death of his mother, Elizabeth Ulmer Bird and her sister-in-law, Janie Davidson in 1931.
