Jack Dean Davis Sr. of West Lafayette, Indiana, died at 3:31 PM Saturday February 23, 2013, at IU Heath Arnett Hospital.
Jack was born August 23, 1925, in Lafayette, Indiana, to the late Wilbur E. Davis Sr. and Marguerite Bonnet Davis. He graduated from Jefferson High School.
He served in the Army in World War II and in the Korean Conflict. His service spanned three tours of duty from 28SEP44 to 04NOV46, 17JAN49 to 11JUN50, and 12JUN50 to 12JUN53. In service he received many ribbons and medals including five bronze stars.
Jack was employed at Peerless Wire Goods as a machinist until its' closing and then worked at Purdue University in the machine shop until his retirement. After his retirement he spent many days as a volunteer driver transporting local veterans to and from area VA Hospitals.
He is survived by two sons Jack Dean Davis II. (Patsy) and Chris Davis (Kelly), two sisters Norma Drane and Diana Newhart (Myron), three grandchildren Kati Davis, Chad Davis, and Craig Davis, three great grandchildren Colton Davis, Cayne Davis, and Lane Davis, three nephews Davis Newhart (Cleo), Scott Davis (Belinda), and Brian Drane (Shann), and two nieces Cathy Hendrickson (Jon) and Diana Davis II. (Mark).
He was preceded in death by two brothers Wilbur E. Davis Jr. and James E. Davis and by a daughter Janet Louise Lehman.
Jack was a life member of the Combat Infantrymen's Association, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the Battle Ground Lodge No. 313 of Indiana Free Mason, a member of the Masonic Past Masters Association of Tippecanoe County Indiana, and a member of the West Lafayette Chapter #507 Order of Eastern Star including serving as chaplain for many years. In an effort to help those in need, he also founded the Jack Davis Food Pantry located at the Masonic Lodge in Battle Ground, Indiana.
He enjoyed many outdoor activities including fishing for catfish, which was his favorite.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Hippensteel Funeral Home, with Masonic Service at 7 p.m. Funeral services 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Celebrant Carla Ellis officiating. Burial to follow at Zion Cemetery, with Military Honors by VFW #1154 and the U.S. Army.
