SILVER ANNIVERSARY - Observed by Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Schaefer of Hickory St

Mr. and Mrs. Richard M. Schaefer celebrated their silver wedding anniversary at their home, 20 Hickory Street, Thursday evening, in a most delightful manner, and their large number of relatives and friends who called during the evening to offer their congratulations to the couple were finely entertained by them. The celebration began at 7 o'clock and it was long after midnight before some of the guests departed for their homes. The time was enjoyably spent with dancing and singing, the whole house being utilized for the event. A number of selections were rendered by the Meriden Saengerbund, of which Mr. Schaefer is a member.

From 10 till 11 o'clock a fine supper was served, and every one present joined together and helped make the celebration one long to be remembered by the couple and their children. The relatives and friends did not forget Mr. and Mrs. Schaefer, as the large number of handsome gifts displayed showed the high esteem in which they are held. Long life and many more years of happiness were the wishes extended to Mr. and Mrs. Schaefer by their guests as they were departing for their homes.

Mr. and Mrs. Schaefer were married in Meriden on April 23, 1878, at the house of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Frobel on Steuben Street, Mrs. Schaefer's name before her marriage being Miss Minnie Frobel. They were both born in Germany, the husband in Meerane, Saxony, and the wife in the town of Neufut, and there was only two days difference in the time of their landing in this country. Mrs. Schaefer, who came over on a sailing vessel, which took six weeks to cross the ocean, landed in New York with her father, August 7, 1872, and Mr. Schaefer, who came over in a steamer, after a three weeks sail, arrived August 9, 1872. Mrs. Schaefer and her father came to Meriden, and her husband went to Pittsfield, Mass., where he worked till the following May, and on the 19th of that month he came to Meriden, where he has resided ever since. A few years after coming to this city he becames acquainted with his wife. Mr. Schaefer, who is employed at the Connecticut Telephone company, is a well known citizen of this city, and is the father of five children, Emil, the well known drug clerk; Richard M. Jr, Charles, Nettie and Mabel.

Besides being surrounded by their children, relatives and friends of the celebration, the occasion was even more pleasant by the presence of Mrs. Schaefer's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Frobel and Mr. Schaefer's [clipping is ripped]... rs old. {note – his father was alive}
