HOUGHTON - Carl W. Bates, 68, passed away suddenly Monday evening at his home following an apparent heart attack.

Mr. Bates was born Oct. 16, 1906 in Dighton, Mich., and moved with his parents at an early age to Houghton. In 1916 he moved to Donken where he resided until 1943 when he returned to Houghton.

He was employed by the Case Lumber Company, The Brown-Lee Lumber company and the Blazer Lumber Company all of Donken as a lumber scaler, and for 32 years by the Ladish Company in Cudahy, Wis., retiring in 1972.

Mr. Bates married the former Eleanore Haas on Feb. 29, 1936 in Houghton.

Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Anthony (Roberta) Smith of Cudahy, Wisc., and Mrs. Dennis (Judith) Antilla of Ontonagon; a son, Arthur C. of Hurontown; 14 grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Cyril (Iva) Gauthier of Hurontown; three brothers, Kenneth of Butte, Mont., Archie of Houghton, and Marion of Dodgeville and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

The body will remain at the Plowe Funeral Home from 2 p.m. Wednesday until time of funeral services Thursday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. James McLaurin will officiate and burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
