Ponca City Man Killed In OKC Truck Wreck
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A tractor-trailer rig crashed down from an elevated ramp Friday, killing its driver and spilling oil and blocking one of Oklahoma's busiest highway junctions
The truck was leaving Interstate 40 eastbound to head north on Interstate 35 when it fell onto a lower ramp that feeds from I-35 southbound onto I-40 eastbound, Oklahoma Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Stewart Meyer said.
The highway patrol said the driver, John E. Montgomery, 65, of Ponca City, died of massive head injuries about three hours after the 12:47 p.m. accident.
Although the area was drenched with heavy rains earlier in the day, the cause of the crash was not immediately known, Meyer said.
''Its still under investigation. We don't really know at this time.'' Meyer said. The truck began leaking large amounts of ''what appears to be crude oil,'' Meyer said. A hazardous materials team was testing the material.
At least two other vehicles were damaged, but the truck itself did not fall on them, Meyer said.
''There were some other things, debris and whatnot, that fell from one level to another and caused the damage,'' Meyer said.
Westbound traffic on Interstate 40 was temporarily shut down, along with several of the ramps in the Fort Smith Junction.

John Edward Montgomery, longtime Ponca City resident, died Friday, July 18, 1997, at the University Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was 65.

A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Grace Memorial Chapel with Deacon Richard Robinson officiating. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 21, 1997, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. John J. Michalicka as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel

Born Oct. 31, 1931, in Alva, he was the son of William V. and Anna (Lyons) Montgomery. He graduated from high school in Ponca City. He then entered the U.S. Navy and served from 1950 to 1954 aboard the USS Bataan.

On July 21, 1956, he was married to Farena King at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ponca City. John was a truck driver most of his life. He worked for Conoco in the Transportation Department until retiring in 1985. He later drove for George Self Propane, Groendyke, Sullivan Trucking, ETS and Ellsworth Motor Freight Lines. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the American Legion Huff-Minor Post 14. He enjoyed working on the family's autos and horseback riding with his children and grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Farena Montgomery, of the home; two sons, Brennan and his wife, Cheryl, and Anthony "Tony" and his fiance, Cynthia Childers; five grandchildren, Bambi Dawn Sundeen, Brandi De'Ann Montgomery, Mikel JJ Montgomery, Adam John Montgomery, and Jonathan Edward Childers; one great grandchild, Chayston Lee Mykel Sundeen/Alexander; four sisters, Eileen Burgell, Mrs. Clarence (Jackie) Cook, Mrs. Dee (Eleanor) Leven of Newkirk and Bonnie Gray; one brother, J.K.
