He was born July 13, 1925 in Jacksonville, the son of Ross and Mary Elizabeth McLain Baker. He married Ama Elaine McGownd and they were later divorced.
He married Rose Fox Morris on May 17, 1976 in Chapin and she survives. He is also survived by two sons, Paul (wife, Mary) Baker and William J. (wife, Rosie) Baker, both of Chapin; two step-sons, Forrest Dirden and Clark (wife, Kristy) Dirden, both of Jacksonville; one step-daughter, Tracy (husband, Mike) Mayberry of Jacksonville; fourteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Frances Stone of Jacksonville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his step-father, Clarence Christison, by whom he was raised.
Mr. Baker started his career as a driver for Stewart Brothers Trucking in Jacksonville. He later became a diesel mechanic for the Jacksonville Bus Garage. Mr. Baker was later an owner/operator before going to work for Equipment Trucking. He retired from there in 1989. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, watching Western movies, and fishing.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Williamson Funeral Home, with burial at Diamond Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 11 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Hospice Care of Central Illinois, Jacksonville Branch.
