Sally's parents, Karl Howell Behr and Helen Newsom Behr Mathey were passengers on the ill-fated maiden voyage of the R.M.S. Titanic in April 1912. Helen's mother and step-father, Sallie and Richard Beckwith, were also on board. All 4 were placed in the second lifeboat to be deployed and rescued by the R.M.S. Carpathia. Karl and Helen were married in New York City on March 1, 1913. They had 4 children. After the death of Karl, Sally's mother Helen remarried. Her second husband was Dean Mathey, a friend and tennis partner of her first husband.

Sally had 3 brothers, Karl H. Behr Jr. (1914–2002), Peter Howell Behr (1915–1997), James Howell Behr (1920–1976).

Sally married Samuel Leonard Pettit. They had a son, James Dravo Pettit, and two daughters, Sandra Pettit Durgin and Helen "Mimi" Pettit, all of Wilmington.
