Ray was the son of Steven L. Nichols and Ellen Jane Drake. He married Grace Oldfield on June 20, 1906 at Sac City, IA. They were the parents of Eddie, Madge, Maxine, and Harry.

Aug 26, 1955 - Carroll Daily Times - Ray F. Nichols, 72 died at 4.30 p.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Hospital after a long illness. He had been hospitalized since August 6. Mr. Nichols was well known in Odd Fellowship locally and
throughout the state. He held one of the highest state offices having been elected Grand Chief Patriarch of the Iowa Encampment Branch last year.

He had filled every office in Carroil Lodge No. 279, I.O.O.F. He was also a member of Patriarchs Militant. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Huffman Funeral Home, where the body is resting until the time of the final rites. The Rev. C. Hugo Orf, minister of the Methodist Church, will officiate. The Odd Fellow service will be given at the graveside in the Carroll City Cemetery.

Mr. Nichols, former city mail carrier, had lived here 42 years. He was married, at Sac City to Grace Oldfield, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Eddie Nichols, Des Moines; two daughters, Mrs. A.J. (Madge) Winter, Carroll, and Mrs. Leslie (Maxine) Harry, San Diego, Calif., and grandchildren.

A son, Harry Nichols, one brother, and two sisters preceded him in death.

Mr. Nichols, born Dec 16, 1882, in Sycamore, Illinois, came to Carroll in 1913. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
