Deviney was born near Greensboro, N.C., in 1895. She earned a bachelor's degree in science from UNC-Greensboro, then the Woman's College of North Carolina, where she made Phi Beta Kappa. She earned a master's degree from the University of Chicago and a doctorate from UNC Chapel Hill. She taught at the Woman's College for two years and Salem (N.C.) College for two years. She was hired at Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee in 1924 and became a popular teacher. She spent 33 years on the faculty, including 15 years as head of the zoology department. She retired from FSU in 1957, the same year she was awarded the annual "Meritorious Award for Teaching," by the Association of Southeastern Biologists.
Never married, Deviney remained in Tallahassee until 1961. She returned to Julian, N.C., where she died in 1964 at the age of 68.
Deviney Hall was opened as Florida Hall in 1952, five years after FSCW became FSU in 1947. The seven-story building off Jefferson Street originally housed men before becoming a longtime women's residence hall. It was renamed Deviney Hall in 1965, following Deviney's death.
