Born and raised in Bigelow, Marshall Co., Kansas. Married John Rinehart in 1912 and removed to Washington state. To them one daughter, Dortha Faith Rinehart, was born. Married Robert H. Whelpley, August 1916 in Multnomah Co., Oregon, three children to this union; twin sons, Ronald & Donald, and a daughter, Ellen Reward.
Verla died during the flu pandemic of 1918, less than a month after giving birth.
After Verla's young death, her infant daughter, Reward, was adopted by uncle Rex Colton. Dortha first lived with a Rinehart uncle, then her grandparents Snook, before finding a permanent home with aunt Kathryn Reward (Snook) Fenley. The twins were first cared for by the doctor that had delivered them but eventually returned to their father after he remarried.
