Stephen A. Craig was born July 10th, 1860 near Summer Hill and passed away at his home two and one-half miles north of Pleasant Hill, October 19, 1936, at the age of 76 years, 3 months, and 9 days, following a serious illness of two weeks, during which time he was cared for devotedly by the loving wife, two sons, brother, Robert, neighbors, and friends who rendered every assistance possible. For several nights, Dan Galloway, a graduate nurse cared for him. In early life he was united in marriage to Mary E. Barnd of Martinsburg, and to this union four sons were born, Homer and John passing away in infancy, and the mother passed away a few years later. Two sons survive, Virgil L. of Pleasant Hill and Clyde C. of Curreyville, Mo. and a grandson, John Douglas. On March 5, 1893 he was united in marriage to Mary F. Bowen of Martinsburg, who survives him.. The deceased was a member of the Christian Church of Martinsburg, having confessed his faith in Christ, under the ministry of Rev. H. A. Branstetter in 1887. His entire life he was a resident of Pike County during his early life he was a successful farmer and stock raiser, and or several years was road commissioner in his township. he was a good husband, a kind father and a real neighbor. He leaves to mourn his loss, two brothers, and a number of nieces and nephews, his youngest brother Robert, was with him during his last illness and rendered every service a loving brother could give. Old neighbors and friends acted as casket bearers. They were Jake Long, Carson Butler, Leslie Reeves, Roy Gray and Harry and Hardin Galloway. The minister, Rev. Lee C. Maynard of Colchester, Illinois, officiated at the service, reading the 15th chapter of 1st Corinthians as his text. the music was furnished by Mrs. Grace Hack, pianist, and a choir consisting of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Tennyson, Mrs. Ada Bybee, Mrs. Frank McClintock, Miss Roselle and Mr. Glenn McClintock who sang, Going Down the Valley One by One, The City Four Square, and What a Friend We Have in Jesus. The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Caughlin of Pittsfield, Mrs. Carson Butler and Miss Virgina Eddy. Mr N. L. Eddy and his daughter, Miss Virginia, were funeral directors, with interment in Crescent Heights Cemetery at Pleasant Hill.
