Esther C. Varney

KEENE - Esther C. Varney, 97, formerly of Church Hill Road in Durham, died February 10, 2013 at Genesis of Keene, where she had resided for the past several years.

Born March 25, 1915, in Newmarket, she was the daughter of Fred M. and Mary (Durgin) Varney. Raised in Dover she lived in Hartford, Conn., for 30 years before moving to Durham in 1984, and then to Keene in 2003.

A 1933 graduate of Dover High School she was also a graduate of McIntosh Business College.

For 20 years she was an administrative assistant with Etna Life and Casualty in Hartford. She retired in 1980.

Esther was a member of the Silver Squares of Durham. She sang in many local choirs in both the Hartford and Dover area, including the First Parish Church in Dover.

She volunteered at the University of New Hampshire, the Durham Historical Society, and Cheshire Medical Center in Keene.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Fred Maurice Varney Jr. and Robert W. Varney, and by her sister, Mary Barbara St. Laurent.

A Graveside Service will be held in the spring in Riverside Cemetery, Newmarket.
