Richard "Dick" Cross Houston was the third child of Temple Lea Houston, Sr. and Laura Cross.

Richard Cross Houston married Elizabeth "Bessie" Rhea Richardson on 25 JAN 1920 in the Laura (Cross) Houston home in Woodward.

In 1907 at the age of 12, Richard served as a page to William "Alfalfa Bill" H. Murray in the first Oklahoma legislature. "Alfalfa Bill" Murray served as Governor of Oklahoma from 1931 to 1935.

In 1917, Richard went to work for the Katy Railroad in Woodward. Later he woked for the Severin Tire and Supply Company from 1921 to 1938. In 1938, he was elected and served as State Representative from Woodward County in the legislature for two terms from 1939 to 1943.

During World War II, he was stationed at Cimarron Field in Yukon, Oklahoma, as a dispatcher. He returned to Woodward and was an auditor and represenataive for the Oklahoma Tax Commision in Northwest Oklahoma retiring in 1962. That same year, he was appointed Secretary of the Woodward County Election Board until retiring on 01 SEP 1968.
