Devoted to her family and her Catholic faith during her long life, Mary Irwin Egan died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Alexian Village Health Care Center on Signal Mountain, Tenn. She was 99. Born Mary Isabel Irwin on Jan. 15, 1910, in Knoxville, Tenn., graduated from St. Mary's High School in Knoxville, Tenn., in 1926, St. Camillus Academy in Corbin, Ky., in 1928, and from the University of Tennessee in home economics with an emphasis in textiles. She was a homemaker for her family, volunteered with Service League of Sheffield, Ala., an avid bridge player, and participated in the PTAs of all her children.
Mrs. Egan is a lifelong Catholic, beginning with Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Knoxville, Tenn., St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Florence, Ala., and most recently, St. Jude's Catholic Church in Chattanooga. She served on numerous groups in the churches and supported Catholic education.
Mrs. Egan was predeceased by her husband, Edward, and twin daughters, Patricia Helen (1936) and Jane Margaret (1936-2009).
She is survived by her daughters, Sheila (Rich) Ptacin, of Chattanooga, and Eileen Moore, of Birmingham, Ala; son, Father Edward P. Egan O.S.B., of St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, Ala., (Col. U.S. Army, retired). Mrs. Egan is also survived by her four grandchildren, Richard R. (Diane) Ptacin, Seattle, Wash., Julie (Keith) Dixon, Birmingham, Suzanne (Thomas) Nuccio, Nashville, Tenn., and Abigail Casey, Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Egan has five great-grandchildren.
A resurrection mass will be at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Florence at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, 2009. Pallbearers will be Rich Ptacin Sr., Rich Ptacin Jr., Keith Dixon, Tom Nuccio, Judge Tim Irwin and Don Bollen. The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the Family Life Center at St. Joseph's. Interment will be at Greenview Memorial Park on Chisholm Road in Florence.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Bernard Abbey, Cullman, 32550 or a Catholic charity of your choice.
