Born in Ironton, Ky. on Dec. 16,1897 to Newton Tomas Higgins & Alpha Donie Higgins both of Ironton Ky.. She grew up in Ky. and at age 15 when her mother died she helped raise her younger siblings and delivered the mail in a horse and buggy. On Sept. 20, 1920 in Paducah, Ky. she married Raymond Higgins at the age of 22. They had 5 children one of which died at birth or shortly after (Eldon a boy). The remaining 3 girls (Kornethea Lee, Maxine, Barbara) & 1 boy (Willard) moved to Alton, Ill.. She found work at the Olin Corp. of E. Alton, Ill. for some time then resigned to become a housewife. She died April 11, 1979 at the age of 81 in St. Anthony's Hosp. in Alton of heart failure and chronic lympocytic leukemia.
