He was slow, quiet and religious. He lived on his parent's farm until he was 23. He married 16 Feb 1854 to Susan Keeling b-22 March 1833, d- 08 Aug 1916 buried in Braggs, OK. Jim engaged in farming after his marriage and later became the senior member of the firm of Gilliland and Stotts, dealers in hardware and agricultural implements in Huntsville, Ark. He was a Democrat and a Mason. He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
