John L. Huffman, 83, of Otto, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2012.
Born in Newberry, SC, he was the son of the late John Lester Huffman Sr. and Rebecca Poole
Huffman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Huffman.
John graduated from Newberry High School in 1946 and received a degree in Vocational
Agriculture from Clemson University in 1951. He later (1956-59) did graduate work in
Agronomy and Agriculture at Clemson. In 1970, he received his Masters Degree in Vocational
Education and Guidance from NC State University. During the years 1970-73, he did further post
graduate work at NC State, earning a Doctorate of Education. John served our country in the
U.S. Army during the years 1951-53. John worked for the Department of Public Instruction in
Raleigh for 38 years. After retiring he developed an interest in native plants and their
preservation. He was owner and operator of Huffman's Native Plants, where he shared his
knowledge of these plants and encouraged their use in their native habitats. John was an avid
storyteller who loved sharing stories of his various life experiences. He was a member of the
Rotary Club, the North Carolina Retired School Personnel, NC Nursery Association, American
Nursery Association, Georgia Rhododendron Association, IPTAY, NCVA, AVA, NCCLA,
NCASA, National Rifle Association, Appalachian Trail Conference and Clemson University
Alumni Association. He was a member of Mulberry United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Betty Huffman; daughter, Amy Westmoreland and
husband, Westy, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; three grandchildren, Anna, Jay and John Westmoreland;
and several cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 31 in the Chapel of Macon Funeral
Home, with Rev. Duane Corle, Rev. Janet Green, Rev. Vic Green and Rev. Laura Whitt
officiating. Burial was in Mulberry UMC Cemetery. The family received friends from 5-7:00
p.m. Friday, March 30 at Macon Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Robert Huffman, Jeff Poole,
Gregory Craig, Michael Craig, Daryl Whitt, Paul Martin, Eric Owen and Robert Covington.
