Hyder Pit Barnes born to Joseph B. Barnes and Catherine Spencer. He was raised in La Salle Co., Illinois where his father had a farm. At the age of 20, he married Maria L. Harritt in Illinois. Three children were born to this marriage, Catherine Lydia, Helen, and Joseph, In the early summer of 1883, the Barnes family moved to Bandera, Texas where Hyder's father, Joseph B. Barnes, was farming. After living there a short time, Hyder died of tuberculosis at the age of 35 and was buried there.
