Michael Lee Vitzthum was born September 16, 1932 at rural Wesley to George and Bernice (Dolan) Vitzthum. Mike graduated from Wesley High School and served in the United States Army from 1953 - 1955. Following his discharge he returned to Wesley where he farmed. On May 27, 1959, Mike was united in marriage to Joan M. Ricke in Wesley. Together they enjoyed farming, traveling, camping, fishing and golfing. Mike formed Vitzthum Brothers trucking with his brother Jack and did custom farm work for area farmers until the mid 1990's. Mike and Joan lived south of Wesley until 1962 when they moved into town.

Mike had a passion for the Yankees and his "Gator". Mike was known as a happy person, enjoying conversation on his deck or at the elevator with his friends. He knew everyone and everyone knew him. His greatest love was his family, enjoying time spent with his grandchildren. Mike was a long time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley.

Mike died at his home in Wesley on Friday morning, February 15, 2013 at the age of 80.

Survivors include his children; Wayne and wife Lynette of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Duane of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Rod and wife Laurie of Algona, Iowa; Judy and husband Verne Reding of Wesley, Iowa; Sherry and husband Tod Driscoll of Ankeny, Iowa; Roxy and husband Pete Bormann of Bode, Iowa and Cory and wife Crystal of Ankeny, Iowa as well as 15 grandchildren. Also surviving is brother Tom and wife Louise of Laurens, Iowa and sister Jan and husband Bill Ludwig of Corwith, Iowa. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joan in July, 2010, brothers Louis, Galen, George, Dennis and Jack and sisters, Rita Youngwirth and Ruth Kaloplastos.
