He was born to Lawson and Winfred Hunter Brooks, in Bluefield W. Va. He obtained a BA, West Virginia State College (1950), a MA, West Virginia University (1953), Ph.D. Ed., Carnegie Mellon University. He was a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran, Buffalo Soldier, and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. He was a history professor at Texas Southern University of 41 years, and taught many of the teachers in the Houston area. In addiition, he authored 16 books on the various aspects of Black History.
