Heinrich Wilhelm Theuerkauff arrived in the USA in 1854. At the port of entry, due to a language barrier, his name was wrongfully recorded and Americanized as William Henry Diercouff. He was my Gr Gr Uncle, brother to my Gr Gr Grandmother Johanna Marie Dorothea Theuerkauf born in 1834 Stockhausen. He was married on 29 Marz 1854 to Christiana Meier -her name is inscribed as Christena on the grave. His date of birth on the grave is also wrong. It is recorded as 25 Oct 1825. He was born on 18 Oct . 1825. One can easily see how the numbers can be transposed. The last f on the Theuerkauf name was written with a line above the f, meaning repeat the letter. It was acceptable in Germany to write a double letter or just pen in a line above the letter meaning repeat it. Apparently at the port of entry here, they at least got that right as Diercouff. Their parents were Theuerkauf, Johann Caspar 1796-1858 and Schulze, Catharina Johanna Marie 1795 -?
