Gerald was the twin of Geraldine Hadley Schmidt. As toddlers they understood and tried to explain to others, their twin's baby gibberish. As a teen he liked to draw and he was a talented cartoonist. When Gerald graduated from high school he enlisted in the US Navy with his cousin Donald Headley, however, they were sent to different ships which was a disappointment to them.

Once his tour of duty was over in the military he worked in the building trade until he decided he'd had enough of that, and went to work for the telephone company. With the telephone company he moved to Yucca Valley, California and enjoyed working for the phone company so much that he considered it a hobby.

Gerald was a kind person, a peace-maker, devoted to helping others whenever possible. He married twice and fathered several children. His favorite words of correction were "Be nice."
