I've always been troubled by the birth and death dates for John and his two wives. To my knowledge, nothing was ever documented. Descendants erected this memorial stone in 1819.
His tombstone inscription names his two wives. First was Elizabeth Thomson, who lived to be 34 years old.
Second was Janet Dunlop, who I assume was younger than John, due to the birth years of her children.

1819 John GIFFEN, weaver, Kildavie, and Janet DUNLOP his wife in memory of John and Janet their children who died in infancy. Also of Elizabeth THOMSON his former spouse died in the 34th year of her age.
