Johnnie Sylva DeAvilla, age 88, passed away on Jan. 1, 2013 at his home in Coupeville. He was born in Hilts, Calif. on Sept. 16, 1924 to Manuel and Genieve (Black) DeAvilla. He was the oldest of 5 children. He was raised by his beloved grandmother. The family tradition was that the oldest child would care for his grandparents. He was noted for his Ford Model A cars and motorcycles. He loved to fish and hunt in the forests of Northern California. In 1944 he joined the navy but was injured in training and discharged. He then joined the California National Guard. Johnnie worked in sawmills of the Northern California forests building roads for Fruit Grower's Lumber Company and Linneger's Construction. He was disabled during the early 1970's gaining a medical retirement. He remained as active as possible around his home acreage until just a few years ago.

Johnnie is preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife of eleven years, Jean (Harris) DeAvilla, his son: Steven DeAvilla Sr., daughters: Jackie Hardy and Bobbie Cash, step children: Jessie Eugene Peery, Patricia Watson and many grand and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Coupeville. Committal with military honors will be held at Sunnyside Cemetery following the funeral.
