W. I. (Irving) Bender, 66, died at 4:30 p. m. at the West Union hospital. He was apparently recovering from surgery, and expecting to undergo another operation, when a heart attack ended his life suddenly and unexpectedly. Irving Bender, third son of Henry A. and Juliette Bender, was born April 7, 1874, on the home farm in Bethel township, Fayette county, Iowa. He lived here with his parents until his marriage to Alice Hunerberg Dec. 8, 1898, when they made their home on the farm south of Waucoma, where they lived about forty years and made a home for an adopted son, Donald Bender.

During these years Irving and Alice were members of the Congregational church and later the Federated church of Waucoma, to which they gave as they could of means and attendance. Irving had been a loyal member of the I. 0. 0. F. for over thirty years, and enjoyed the association with friends in that organization. After an illness of three weeks he died in the West Union hospital Nov. 22, 1940.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice (Hunerberg) Bender, Sept. 17, 1939; his parents and eldest brother, Hollis W. Bender. Surviving him, besides the adopted son Donald, are two brothers and two sisters, Adelbert H. Bender, Reginald 0. Bender, Mrs. Winnifred E. Hall, and Janette M. Bender, with whom he made his home the past three months.

Funeral services were held in the Federated church in Waucoma at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, by the Rev. B._B. Wright. Burial was made in the Waucoma cemetery.

Out of town relatives attending the funeral were: Elmer Bender and son, Warren, Spring Valley, Minn.; Mrs. Clara Bender and daughters Elizabeth and Kathryn, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Florence Berns and daughter Juliette and Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Antes and son Richard, West Union; Mr. and Mrs. G. 0. Stone, Margaret Hall, and Miss Janette M. Bender, Fayette; and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Bender, Waterloo.
