Bernard Paul Lester, 81, of West Point, died at 8:10 AM Saturday, June 5, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center; he had been ill for a year. The son of the late Frank A. and Faith Rothenberger Lester, he was born Jan. 6, 1923, in Lafayette. He graduated from West Point High School in 1941. On Jan. 15, 1945, he married Imogene "Jean" Halsema, a homemaker, in Otterbein; she survives.

Mr. Lester was a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Lafayette for 30 years, retiring in 1982. From 1982-1990, he worked for Greater Lafayette Public Transportation Service (now CityBus). He served in the Navy aboard the USS Anderson during World War II as radar operator from 1941-47 with the rank of petty officer second class. He was a life member of St. Mary Cathedral, Disabled American Veterans, Purple Heart Club, 40&8 Navy Club, and American Legion Post 14.

Surviving with his widow are a daughter, Paula B. (Mrs. Ted) Taylor of West Point; a son, John D. Lester (wife Kathy) of West Point; three brothers, Kenneth E. Lester of Lafayette, Harold Lester of West Lafayette, and Harry Lester of Schereville; a sister, Norma (Mrs. Dale) Hoppes of Maryland; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Randall G. Lester; brothers, Frank A. Lester, Jr., Cleo Lester, Leo Lester, George Lester; and a sister, Mildred J. Lester. Funeral mass June 8 at St. Mary Cathedral, the Rev. Ambrose Ziegler officiating; internment Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, with military graveside rites.
