Former President of Citizens Bank Dies
Hugh Colvin, president of Citizens Bank & Trust Company for eight years and the chairman of its board for five years, died Sunday, April 3, at 1:35 p.m., at Taylor County Hospital from a heart attack. He was 72. Colvin began his tenure with the bank in 1941 when he was hired as a teller and bookkeeper. In 1943 he became assistant cashier and was promoted to cashier in 1949, a position he held through 1966. He served as director from 1949 until 1980; as secretary to the board in 1960; as executive vice-president from 1966 through 1968; as president from 1968 through 1978 and as chairman of the board from 1971 through 1976. From 1980 until April of this year Colvin was director emeritus and consultant to the bank. He attended the Bowling Green College and was a graduate of Campbellsville College. He was a member of the Campbellsville Baptist Church where he had served as a former Sunday School teacher and a deacon. He was a member of the Volunteer Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Campbellsville-Taylor County Chamber of Commerce, charter member of the Lions Club, a member of the Campbellsville College Board of Trustees for 12 years, former city treasurer for 35 years and current treasurer of the Campbellsville-Taylor County Industrial Foundation. He was an avid Campbellsville College sports promoter and enjoyed fishing and coin collecting. Hugh Colvin, 103 College Street, was born May 8, 1910, the son of the late Joseph James Colvin and Sallie Tee Tandy Colvin. He married Lorene Sullivan in 1934. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two brothers and two sisters: Edgar Colvin, Irene Ware and Helen Barnett, all of Campbellsville, and Howard Colvin of Virginia Beach, Va. He was preceded in death by one brother, Charlie Colvin, who died in 1974. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were Tuesday, April 5, at the Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home with Dr. J. Chester Badgett and Dr. James Jones officiating. Burial was in Brookside Cemetery. Pallbearers were Terry Melvin, Danny Melvin, Jacky Melvin, Jimmy Ware, Mike Ware and Roger Barnett. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Volunteer Sunday School Class: George Gumm, V. A. Harmon, Henry A. Buchanan, Turney Harding, Bob Hayes, Dr. Paul Horner, Melvin James, Buckner Miller, C. A. Noe, Fritz Potts, Irvin Ratcliffe, and Ray D. Ross. Other honorary pallbearers included Russell Caulk, Ronnie Bennett, Sam Neeley, Wayne Kessler, Carl Smith, William Mark Netherland, Dr. Joe Turpin, Frank Page Smith, Billy Mitchell, C. F. McLean, and George Richard Phillips.
