Prof. Grant B. Gerberich, a native of Lebanon County, and remembered here not only because of an educational career which began in this section but because of periodical visits since then to his old home territory, died on Thursday night (Feb. 6, 1941) at Greenville, PA, where he resided for a long time past. He had been in failing health for two years, suffering from arterial sclerosis, but his condition was not such as to cause any anxiety until about six months ago when he was afflicted with general debility. He managed to make his annual trip to the Gerberich reunion here, however, last summer, it proved to be his last visit. He was in the 75th year of his age. Notice of the death was received here early this morning by Dr. H.L. Gerberich, a brother, of 514 Cumberland Street, and was transmitted to other local relatives. Dr. Guy A. Gerberich, of North Ninth Street, is a nephew, and Edwin T. Gerberich, of Union Township, is a brother. Mrs. H.O. Louser, of Harrisburg, is a sister, and Prof. Charles C. Dotter, of Annville, is a brother-in-law. The decedent leaves his wife and a daughter, Marion E. Gerberich, at Greenville. Services will be held at that place and burial will be at Mt. Annville Cemetery. Prof. Gerberich was a son of the late Daniel U. and Catherine (Boeshore) Gerberich. The homestead farm where he was born July 6, 1866, and subsequently reared is now included in the Pennsylvania Military reservation. As a boy he traveled over the entire Gap area which is now a soldier containment and he knew the region, including the mountain paths, like the hallways in his home. After attending the schools in his native township as a boy, he graduated at the West Chester State Normal School, now known as a state teachers college. He graduated later in 1900 at Lebanon Valley College, Annville. He had in the interim taught school in the rural districts of the country, principaly in East Hanover and Union Townships, and he became widely known in that capacity. Leaving Lebanon Valley College, he became principal of the South Annville township high school in 1900 and served two terms in that position. He was then elected superintendent of the public schools at Johnsonburg. He served six terms there, and in 1908 was elected superintendent of the schools in the city of Greenville. He continued there for twenty-four years, retiring under the school code regulations in 1932. During the period that he taught in Annville he conducted a Normal School for the training of teachers in conjunction with Prof. Wesley M. Heilman, former Supt. Alleman, of Grenburg, D.J. Leopold, now president of the First National Bank of Lebanon, and the late Z.A. Bowman of Annville. The "Normal" as then known, was widely attended and many of the professional men of that period patronized the school. Prof. Gerberich was a life long member of the Lutheran Church and while at Annville was superintendent of the Bible school for many years. More recently he was active in the Lutheran Church of Greenville and served as a trustee of Thiel College located in that city. [Lebanon Daily News]
