Mary M. Hogue shares the headstone with her husband, Rev. Henry J. Hogue. She was born in GA she grew up in GA during the Civil War (Her grandson, Carl Hogue, told me a story about this). Her mom's name on Death certicate simply says "Poly An Brown." She named her first son Sherman after the Union General (more story to that)... that child is also buried in Panther Creek Cemetery.

Notice the census below it shows she lived in GA... her name is listed as "Mary" on the 1860 Census/Towns Co, GA; in 1870 the family are in Union Co., GA and her name on the census is Polly M./ Between 1870 and 1880 her father died. We see her mother as head of the house in the 1880 US Census for Graham County, NC; she isn't listed as she got married just before this Census. We know that the family moved to Graham County at least by 1878.

On 9 DEC 1878, she married Henry Jackson Hogue (born in TN); Graham County Marriages (from Register of Deeds office in Graham County):
Hoge, Henry residence: Graham Co. age 20/ white
to Matilda Brown residence: Graham Co. age 21/white
Minister/officiating: Hyde, David, J.P.
Witnesses: Joel L. Crisp, Dales D. Pendley, S. Lales

Another Find A Grave volunteer, Trails of History, found this record:
Matilda, age 21, married Henry Hogue, age 20, on 06 Dec 1878 in Stecoah, Graham Co, NC. Performed by: David Hyde, Justice of the Peace. James M Crisp, Thomas Welch, T.J. Ammons, witnesses.

Her Grandson, Carl John Hogue, told me that "Grandad's pet name for her was "Tilley." Others called her "Tilda"

Notice also, her Mother is sometimes called Mary, sometimes called Mary A and one time called Polly A. on the census (see link to her Mom's page for more information. Her name was Mary Ann "Polly" Gallion Brown, her father was Nathaniel Brown.

Also, in 1900 Census for NC, it lists her with her husband living at Wesser, NC:
It lists her as Polly A. Hogue (Husband as Henry J Hogue) and it says she was born in GA, her father was born in GA, her mother was born in NC. This all fits the info on her parents I have linked.

Her Death certificate was reported by her son in law and it says her father was "unknown" and her mother was "Pely [or Poly] An Brown"
