Rev. Henry Jackson Hogue, according to his Death Certificate, was born in Tennessee; however, other sources, including the Federal Census/ Swain Co., NC/Nantahala has his birthplace as NC; generally the Census would be self reported and his death cert. was reported by a son in law. He was born in Stecoah, NC, which is in present day Graham County. Also, old timers sometimes put "Tennessee" if they were born West of the Little Tennessee River in NC.

Baptist minister of the Gospel. Death certificate says he's the son of "Lenard Hogue" born in TN) and "Sinda Marcus Hogue" (born in Tenn.) Father's full name is James Leonard Hogue (headstone in Panther Creek Cemetery is: Jas. L. Hogue) and Lucinda/Loucinda Pendley/Marcus Hogue (buried in Trion, GA).
___________

On 9 DEC 1878, he married Mary Matilda Brown (born in GA); Graham County Marriages:
Hoge, Henry residence: Graham Co. age 20/ white
to Matilda Brown residence: Graham Co. age 21/white
Minister/officiating: Hyde, David, J.P.
Witnesses: Joel L. Crisp, Dales D. Pendley, S. Lales

His Grandson, Carl John Hogue, told me that "Grandad's pet name for her was "Tilley."
__________

He pastored Panther Creek Baptist Church and Forney Creek Baptist Church simultaneously; he was also an early pastor of Stecoah Baptist Church (his uncle Fonze Marcus wrote asking him to come pastor as they had no pastor there). He was listed as an early pastor of Stecoah Baptist Church also. From 1910 to 1913 he was the pastor of Briartown Baptist Church in Nantahala, NC (source: church minutes). At one time he also pastored Wesser Creek Baptist Church (now called Nantahala Baptist Church).

Rev. Henry Jackson Hogue signed documents with "M.G." for "Minister of the Gospel" after his name. Many in his day viewed "Reverend" as one of the titles of God in the Bible. He lived at Wesser, NC, his house was up the mountain from where Paddle Inn by the Nantahala River is, across the river from the highway. Reference also for home is copy of envelope of letter from his uncle "Faunz" Marcus which gives address "Wesser, NC"( I have this copy of the letter in my possession. ML).
Nantahala was the township (never a town) and by there was a post office at Wesser there across the River. Wesser was also never a town but a community and the train stopped there and took people back and forth to nearby Bryson City, a 2 hour trip which is about a 15 or 20 minute drive today. The post office and train stop is over the bridge from where the present day Nantahala Outdoor Center is--before it was the NOC, it was a small general store. There is a rock formation in the center of the River which in his day was used by loggers to stand on and break up log jams going down the River-- today that square stone masonry formation is used as support for a footbridge built by the NOC.

According to Inez Hogue Capitini and Carl John Hogue, grandchildren of Rev. HJ and Mary M Hogue (I, ML have their handwritten notes on this),
Their children are:

1.Dora Hogue Bryant (m. Oscar Montgomery Bryant; Children:
James Henry, Maude "Maudie," Robert Lee, Ethel Lauda "Laudie," Ida B, Frank Dewey, Dixie Pauline, Della Oleen, Ethel Velma, Eunice, Thelma Marie, Eugene Floyd). Find a Grave # 194978703
2.Martha Hogue Wright (m. Tom Wright)
3. Delilah Hogue (buried at Panther Creek Cemetery)
4. Carrie Hogue Woodard (m. Mose Woodard; chldren: Buford, Arthur, Leonard, Talmadge, Bundell, Ethel, Edna, Hazel).
5. Riley William Hogue (m. Lottie Dills)
6. Roy Hogue (m. Maggie; son is Roy Hogue Jr.)
7. Sherman Hogue (deceased infancy, buried Panther Creek Cem., named after General Sherman).

He was a nephew of Alfonzo "Faunz" Marcus --reference, copy of a letter sent to him signed by Faunz Marcus. (Henry Jackson Hogue's Mother was Lucinda Pendley/Marcus Hogue). I was told by Millie "Bill" Marcus Vickery(her niece, Faunz's daughter) that she was called "Sinda" and that was confirmed by Emma Inez Capitini and Carl John Hogue who also confirmed their g-grandfather's name was Leonard (husband of Sinda Marcus Hogue); Rev. Henry J. Hogue's death certificate also names his Mom as "Sinda Marcus Hogue" and his Dad as "Lenard Hogue"-- death certifcate informant was Rev. Henry Jackson Hogue's son-in-law, Rev. J.M. Woodard of Hazelwood, NC). ML

After his death, a daughter owned the land until it was claimed by the Government when creating the Nantahala National Forest, she was given $700 for 700 acres of land according to family.

His body is buried at Panther Creek Baptist Church in Stecoah, Graham County, NC and that was one of the graves moved from Japan by the TVA when creating Fontana Lake. His father and grandparents are others) but his soul lives on in the presence of Jesus, his Master. His wife, Mary Matilda "Tilda" Brown Hogue, whom he lovingly called "Tilly," shares the tombstone with him. She was from GA (reference, her grandson, Carl John Hogue); her death certicate listed her Mom as "Polly An Brown") death certificate erroneously says she was born in NC.

Note: JM Woodard, his son in law, was Rev. John Moses Woodard (Find A Grave Memorial# 65707375)
