George Abernathy Age 18 years Enlisted September 12, 1863 as Private with Company D. 13th US Colored Troops Infantry promoted Corporal October 1, 1865 mustered out January 10, 1866 at Nashville Tennessee.

The Topeka Mail Friday 25 March, 1898, pg. 4:
G.W. Abernathy, an old resident and an estimable citizen, died of heart disease last Friday afternoon. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon from the Asbury A.M.E. Church and was attended by a large congregation. Fort Pillow Post, of which deceased was an honored member, conducted the services. The remains were interred in Topeka Cemetery. Deceased leaves a widow and several children to mourn his loss.
