One of 16 children born to Robert S. and Sarah (Tanner) Dougherty.
Excerpted from the History of Page County written by V.J. Tewy, 1876:
"On June 9, 1840 (in Lawrence County, Indiana), Gideon was united in marriage with Elizabeth Mahan. First two of nine children were born there in Indiana. In 1844 the young family moved to Iowa on a 3-week journey with an ox-team. During the first winter, they lived in a tent somewhere in Taylor County. In the spring of 1845 they settled in a log cabin in the neighboring Page County. Indians and wild games of all kinds were to be found in abundance, and privations and hardships were met quite as frequently. But the determination to succeed was strong in the hearts of these worthy pioneers, and their efforts were generously rewarded."

One of the oldest settlers in East River Township, Page County, Iowa; a lifelong farmer; a gold prospector 5 years in California; a staunch Democrat.
