Aged 80 years: a Black Pioneer, a true California 49er from Virginia. By 1853 he ran a barber shop on D Street in Marysville with his brother, John H. Gassaway, also from Virginia. James owned land and a brick building that was located in Marysville between 5th and 6th Street.
He was a miner, barber, landowner and business owner.
