Martha Patterson Neal was the youngest of family of seven, three boys and four girls. Only one survives her, Mrs. A.M. Sutton, who was present at the funeral. She moved with her parents to Dallas county, Iowa, at the age of 13 years and moved from there to Story county, Iowa, and after one and a half years returned to Dallas county, where she was united in marriage to Dewitt Clinton Benedict in 1855 and moved to Madison county, Iowa.
She moved to Carroll county in 1868, where she has since resided. To this union were born eleven children, seven boys and four girls. Her husband, four boys and one girl survive her.
Mrs. Benedict united with the M.E. church early in life and afterward with the U.B. church when first organized in Carrollton.
Samuel Benedict and wife and little son of Minneapolis, Minn., Elbert Benedict and daughter, Daisy, of Creston, Ia., William Benedict and wife, Grant Benedict, Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Sawtell of near Glidden were present at the funeral.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. H.A. Hayes of the U.B. church, assisted by Rev. W.D. Bradley and also Rev. O’Rouke, the Friend’s pastor.
