Drances Coggin Norton was the seventh of the nine children of Joseph Drances Norton and Anna Elwell (Bridgman) Norton, of Loudville, Massachusetts.

He died at age 22, and never married. Very few details are known about his life, other than the following notes about his early death, written by his grieving father:

Tuesday, Nov. 27, 1877: Dr. Hayes came twice today. Went to Northampton for Mrs. M. D. Hall, as nurse for Drances. Albert Metcalf, Mrs. Hall & Simeon King watched. Was called up at about 12, and Drances died [ . . . ] o'clock in the night.

Wednesday, Nov. 28, 1877: Drances Coggin Norton died at one o'clock this morning, aged 22. Last Aug. 1st, he was taken with measles. 17 days since then pneumonia set in, followed by typhoid fever and delirium for a few days before he died. Dear Drances!
