Martha was the second of seven known children in her family. She lost her mother in 1879. Her father and most of her siblings moved from Missouri and settled in Southern California.
Her first son was born in Missouri after which she and her husband moved to San Joaquin, then San Diego counties and finally settling in Orange County. Their two other children were born in California. Husband Joseph started out as a farm kid and became a well-known building contractor in Tustin, Orange County.
The Martins undoubtedly knew the William Lynch "Lynch" Shatto family as he was also a prominent building contractor in Tustin. After the death of her husband Joseph and the death of Shatto's third wife Abbie in 1915, Martha and Lynch were married in 1916. She outlived Lynch by almost thirty years and continued living in the Edwardian-Colonial Revival home Lynch built in 1907 on A Street, a stop on local walking tours.
Martha is buried next to her first husband, Joseph Finis Martin in Santa Ana Cemetery. Her obit of 7 May 1954 in The Tustin News states she was buried in Fairview Cemetery. Cemetery records have her in Santa Ana Cemetery.
